From the Boneyard!

If you’ve been to a Citadel event you have most likely seen at least one of the school’s popular K-9 duo. Bulldog mascots, General and Boo, can be seen strutting their stuff on the sideline, hanging out in their one-of-a-kind air conditioned dog home (which is a replica of the barracks) or going for a ride in the golf cart with assistant athletic director of facilities and caretaker, Mike Groshon.

Assistant AD for Facilities, Mike Groshon, has been the caretaker for the Bulldog mascots since 2003.

Celebrating a birthday this month, General was born on June 18, 2003 and became the first live mascot to live on the The Citadel campus since the 1950s.  A few months later, Boo was born in September and joined General in Charleston from Myrtle Beach.   Both bulldogs are turning 10 this year and Groshon tells me they are very old for their breed, with the average lifespan of a bulldog being just eight years.

Thirty-nine American universities use a Bulldog as their mascot, but if you ask me, General and Boo lead the litter.  Just check out their digs!

Recently I was able to catch up with Mike Groshon to learn a little more about the longtime Citadel mascots:

Q: When did you start taking care of the mascots?

A: When the program was started in 2003. We used to borrow mascots only for home football games before that.

Q: How do you help the dogs become “fan friendly”?

A: I made sure to always have them meet and greet the fans at the events. They always know they are going to work when the harness comes out.

Q:  Which dog has been your favorite through the years?

A: All the dogs have been great and have represented the school well.

Q: What is your favorite thing about taking care of the bulldogs?

A: I like meeting and talking to our fans, alumni and the other team’s fans. Bulldogs love to meet just about everyone.  The dogs play their part at events, just like the band, cheerleaders, half time show and other, but the bulldogs always steal the show. They are a hard act to follow.

Q: What are General and Boo’s favorite:

Treat?  Any healthy treat is ok.

Thing to do in the day?   Sleep

Place to sleep? My chair or bed

Q: Does Boo or General have any special talents?

A: General can ride a skateboard, but can’t stop, and will not let the knobs enter the barracks.  Boo can open screen doors and loves to open ANY bottles.

  1. Excellent article. The Bulldogs are truly an inspiration. As a longtime Bulldog fan, it was always my dream to own my own personal mascot. When I finally got my chance, I got the grandson of The Citadel’s mascot, General. Mike and the mascots are the best ambassadors. Thanks to Mike for taking on such an important and visible role. The Citadel, and its fans, owe Mike, General, and Boo a huge thanks!
